    Paddle a kayak through an east coast salt marsh! Putting in at First Landing State Park near historic Cape Henry. This 2.5 hour trip will take you past sand beaches, maritime forest, and salt marsh, with opportunities to get out of the boat and explore the beaches. No previous experience necessary. $65 includes transportation, kayak rental, and guide.

    This is a hands-on, bring your own device workshop where participants learn through interactive exercises and the use of civic open data how to create geospatial visualizations with d3 (Data-Driven Documents). The goal of the session is to provide participants with the tools and the knowledge to create interactive and engaging maps and visualizations. They will learn the basic concepts of d3 along the way. Participants should know basic Javascript. Knowledge of a mapping library (OpenLayers, MapboxGL, Leaflet) is helpful. Learnings: When is d3 the right tool and what are the best approaches for creating maps.

    Half Day, Morning: C-ART-o Camp: Exploring Art Materials and Methods

    Relax, explore, create. Let your hands move and your brain unwind after those intense cartography panels! We'll explore tools and methods for hand drawn maps using coastlines, rivers, and mountains as examples. Bring your own subject idea, or use one of ours. We'll cover transfer methods, dip pens & inks, Micron pens, graphite pencils (great for shaded relief), and watercolor. Bring home a finished map, or use the time to make vignettes exploring different methods. Participants' fees cover a packable take-home kit of pencils, pens, and watercolor set. A fun, relaxing way to wrap up another fab NACIS conference.

    This workshop will introduce the analytic and cartographic capabilities inside CARTO BUILDER, exposing the power of connected and dynamic workflows. Participants will learn about drag and drop analytics, their link to interactive and dynamic filters called widgets, cartographic styling, and a series of tips and tricks for customizing your location intelligence application.

    With the ability to extract data from a MySQL database, PHP has become the primary method of presenting web content. Map data is loaded into a MySQL database with OGC spatial extensions and then read by PHP to generate the HTML, JavaScript and Google Maps API code to display maps. As a relational database, MySQL provides an ideal working environment to understand how data in multiple tables is manipulated to respond to a query. The workshop will demonstrate PHP, how a MySQL database is created, and how maps are made from this data.

    Half Day, Afternoon: Getting Started with ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud

    Attendee requirements: Bring your own laptop and any necessary adaptors/ connectors for accessing hard wired internet connection. Adobe Illustrator CC or Photoshop CC latest versions should be installed on your laptop and a valid Adobe ID.
    Many cartographers use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to beautify their maps. Esri's new plugin - ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud - provides a simple integration enabling cartographers and designers, to bring valuable GIS maps and layers into Adobe's design space. In this workshop we will show how this app works, right from ingesting local and cloud-based content, to visualizing the data and plugging in design assets for a speedy cartographic workflow. We will share what's available with the free vs paid versions and examine its utility for your current or prospective ArcGIS configurations.
