NACIS needs your help!

We are looking for volunteers to help out at our annual conference in October and beyond. Opportunities range from simple to more involved, and there’s something for someone at every level of NACIS experience. Here are some ways you can get involved.

Lunch Bunch Host: Simply walk a group of people to a restaurant, then sit down and have a meal with them. A good way to meet new folks.

Map Gallery Helper: The fabulous annual Map Gallery features maps created by attendees. You can make it all possible by setting up the foam-board display panels.

Projector Wranglers: The Keeper of the Projectors gives you a schedule, and you simply set up projectors and move them between rooms.

Moderator Coordinator: Every session needs a moderator. The Coordinator recruits them, helps make sure they are ready, and stands by to answer questions.

New Attendee Ambassador: Veteran attendee? Consider helping new folks get oriented, and welcome them into the NACIS family.

Shop Clerk: NACIS sells branded items to support the conference. Volunteer to mind the shop, and you’ll get a convenient way to meet many attendees.

Finally, we need ongoing help for the Atlas of Design:

Social Media Editor: We publish beautiful books of maps, and more people should know about it. Want to help spread the word?

Educational Materials Creator: Help get the Atlas into classes, and support educators who use it to inspire their students.

If you’re interested in any of these roles, reach out to volunteer@nacis.org! NACIS relies on volunteers to keep our much-loved community running, and we hope you can help.

Voting is open for the 2026 NACIS election

Every year, NACIS holds an election to fill vacant Board seats and as usual, we have a slate of highly qualified candidates for you to choose from. If you’re an active member of the Society, please cast your vote today. Voting ends at 11:59pm Central Time on Oct 12th.

Josh Ryan (Secretary) and Deondre Smiles (Director at Large) have stepped down from the NACIS Board for personal reasons this year. We thank them both for their service to the cartography community, wish them both well in their future endeavors, and look forward to seeing them back at NACIS soon. Per the bylaws, the Board appointed Josie Sajbel to serve the remainder of the current Secretary term. A special election for the vacant Director at Large seat will appear on the ballot, with current board member Lily Houtman as candidate for a one-year term.

Order your conference t-shirt today

The official 2026 NACIS Conference t-shirt is available as PRE-ORDER only to prevent us from ordering too few or too many shirts. To make it easy, you can add your shirt to your conference registration. Pre-orders are due September 21. We’ll order a very limited number of extras, but pre-ordering is the only way you can guarantee that you will get a shirt. These shirts are 100% cotton and printed by Shaky Hands Union Printing, based in Milwaukee. The front features a pocket with “NACIS” printed on the pocket, while the back showcases a larger logo. Sizes are unisex and range from small to 3XL.

Map Gallery Deadline August 31

Enter your maps, research, and cartographic displays into the Map Gallery so your NACIS friends can admire them in October. The Map Gallery always sparks ideas in your fellow cartographers. Show off your work and be inspired by the work of others. The deadline for Map Gallery submissions and Student Print and Dynamic Map Competition entries is August 31st.
