Deadline reminders for #NACIS2024

Our conference is about two weeks away! Here are a few things for you to remember:

We have a winner!

Congratulations to Kelby Beyer, this year’s winner of the NACIS Undergraduate Scholarship. Kelby is a recent graduate of the University of Oregon, with a degree in Archaeology and Spanish. Their stunning map of the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, Netherlands beautifully showcases their impressive cartographic talent and tells an important story of Dutch colonization and plants brought back from colonized regions.

Kelby hopes to use their skills to create visually compelling stories that are accessible to a wide audience, particularly stories that incorporate their knowledge of Spanish and Archaeology. We’re thrilled to have Kelby as part of the NACIS community. Well done, Kelby!

We’ve been getting some press coverage for the volume, too! See our mention in flowingdata, and listen to a half-hour interview with Dan Coe and Nat Case on the VerySpatial podcast.

GoGeomatics Expo 2024:  Highlighting Cartography’s Role in Geospatial Innovation

Logo for the GoGeomatics Expo 2024NACIS would like to call your attention to the GoGeomatics Expo 2024, happening from October 28-30 in Calgary. Join them in celebrating the importance of cartography and its enduring impact on geospatial science.

A key highlight of the Expo is the Canada Maps Traveling Gallery, which celebrates the craftsmanship and innovation of cartography across Canada. This gallery, a collaboration between IMIA and the Canadian Cartographic Association, will feature both historical and contemporary maps reflecting the evolution of the cartographic profession, from traditional hand-drawn maps to cutting-edge geospatial designs. The Gallery offers something for every cartographer and geospatial professional.

If you or your organization would like to submit a map or poster for inclusion in the gallery, submissions are still open. All maps or posters with a connection to Canada are welcome.

Important: The deadline for booking hotel rooms and exhibitor space is October 1st. Don’t miss your chance to participate! Submit your maps and register now at GoGeomatics Expo

Annual map design competition is open

The Cartography and Geographic Information Society (CaGIS) is pleased to announce our 52nd Annual Map Design Competition. The competition is open to all mapmakers in the United States and Canada for maps completed or published during 2024. Entry is free for all, and submissions are due by January 31st.

The purpose of the competition is to promote interest in map design and to recognize significant design advances in cartography. The focus of this competition is design; therefore, judging is based on cartographic design criteria, such as creativity, text (including spelling and grammar), balance, unity, visual hierarchy, clarity, use of color, and subject matter. See award categories and entry details here.
