Atlas of Design call for editors

Every two years, NACIS publishes a new volume of beautiful maps selected from a worldwide competition. If you’re interested in pushing readers to new understandings of design and advocating for design quality, volunteer to be on the Volume 6 editorial team! As an editor, you will assemble an expert panel of judges, engage in meaningful conversations about map design and the mapmaking process, and work with cartographers from around the world. Check out a summary of the position and its responsibilities. Please contact the Atlas of Design team if you would like to apply. The deadline is March 28th. We look forward to hearing from you!

Upcoming deadlines for ICC and ICE

The 30th International Cartographic Conference (ICC) and International Cartographic Exhibition (ICE) will be held in Florence, Italy, December 14-18, 2021, as a hybrid conference with the opportunity to take part in person or via remote access. Details about opportunities to participate and funding to help you participate are available on the US National Committee (USNC) website. The most important upcoming deadline is March 19 for the submission of full papers for the ICC. The deadline for ICC abstracts is May 28. The deadline for ICE submissions is in September.

2021 ICA Children’s Map Competition

Students up to 15 years old can enter their map drawings in the 2021 Children’s Map Competition, sponsored by the International Cartographic Association (ICA), with the theme A Map of My Future World. Kids are encouraged to tap into their creative imagination and mapping superpowers to represent their world of tomorrow, ten years, or one hundred years from now. Students can create an entry themselves, or in teams of two or three.

Six finalists will be selected to represent the U.S. in the Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Exhibition at the ICC in December 2021. Maps by the international finalists may be featured on the ICA website, published in books, and used on UNICEF calendars and cards. CaGIS and the NCGE will give certificates and prizes, such as books and maps, to the entrants to further inspire our next generation of mapmakers. Visit the CaGIS website to see an inspirational video and learn more.
