Assistant Section Editor needed

Cartographic Perspectives, the Journal of NACIS, is looking for your help. We are seeking an Assistant Section Editor to help out with our Practical Cartographer’s Corner section, testing out new cartographic methods before they are published. Have a look at the position description, and let us know if you’re interested!

Dear NACIS Members,

As previously announced in the September newsletter, the NACIS Board is proposing an update to our society Bylaws. We are again linking to the proposed changes as a typo was found in the original posting. In Article I, Section 3, we inadvertently wrote “he” instead of “the”. We have corrected this issue.

These changes will be voted on at the annual business meeting lunch, held Thursday October 22.

NACIS News: September 2026

Conference reminders

The NACIS annual meeting is October 21-24. Here are some reminders for attendees:

LAST CALL:
Conference t-shirt pre-orders due Sept 21

This year, the official 2026 NACIS Conference t-shirt is available as PRE-ORDER only. This helps prevent us from ordering too few or too many shirts. Pre-orders are due September 21, and can be ordered when registering for the conference. We will order a very limited number of extras, but pre-ordering is the only way you can guarantee that you will get a shirt. These shirts are 100% cotton and printed by Shaky Hands Union Printing, based in Milwaukee. The front features a pocket with “NACIS” printed on the pocket, while the back features a larger logo. Sizes are unisex and range from small to 3XL.

If you already registered for the conference and did not pre-order a t-shirt, you can still order one by logging back into the EventSquid account you made when registering for the conference. If you aren’t able to pay for your t-shirt by September 21 but you would like one, please email the Shop Manager, Lily Houtman.
Dear NACIS Members,

The NACIS board is proposing an update to the society Bylaws after conducting a thorough review of them over the past year. We have undertaken this process for a number of reasons, most importantly to ensure the ongoing health and successful administration of our organization. There are a significant number of changes suggested – some quite minor (grammar, etc.) and some more substantial. The substantial changes are generally proposed to:
  • Provide clear policy where we determined the previous bylaws left risky holes
  • Revise existing policy to reflect the current operations of the society
  • Clarify language where misinterpretation could affect the intended meaning of the bylaw.
REVIEW THE CHANGES
We bring these suggested revisions to you ahead of the Annual Business Meeting, to be held on Thursday October 22, 2026 at 12:00 pm Central Time, so that you may have sufficient time to review and reflect on the suggested changes. Please note, for ease of reading and understanding the changes, the linked document presents the Bylaws in two formats: first showing all additions and deletions, then after that a ‘clean’ version with all suggested changes applied.

If you have any questions regarding the updated language of the Bylaws, please contact us at info@nacis.org.

Civil War cartography competition

The Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College is pleased to announce the launch of a new national book award: the E. James Morton Award for Excellence in Original Civil War Cartography. The Morton Award seeks to encourage historians and publishers to think more creatively about how maps can illuminate complex stories—not only in military campaigns, but also in biographies, political history, and cultural and economic studies of the era.

The annual award will recognize the outstanding narrative book with original maps on the American Civil War, honoring both the author and the cartographer whose work most effectively integrates mapping into historical narrative. Submissions for the inaugural award cycle will close on March 1, 2027.

The winning author and cartographer will each receive a $1,000 prize, with formal recognition to take place at the Civil War Institute’s summer conference in 2027. Additional details, including submission guidelines and judging criteria, are available at mortonmapaward.com.

NACIS News: NACIS needs you

NACIS needs your help!

We are looking for volunteers to help out at our annual conference in October and beyond. Opportunities range from simple to more involved, and there’s something for someone at every level of NACIS experience. Here are some ways you can get involved.
  • Lunch Bunch Host: Simply walk a group of people to a restaurant, then sit down and have a meal with them. A good way to meet new folks.

  • Map Gallery Helper: The fabulous annual Map Gallery features maps created by attendees. You can make it all possible by setting up the foam-board display panels.

  • Projector Wranglers: The Keeper of the Projectors gives you a schedule, and you simply set up projectors and move them between rooms.

  • Moderator Coordinator: Every session needs a moderator. The Coordinator recruits them, helps make sure they are ready, and stands by to answer questions.

  • New Attendee Ambassador: Veteran attendee? Consider helping new folks get oriented, and welcome them into the NACIS family.

  • Shop Clerk: NACIS sells branded items to support the conference. Volunteer to mind the shop, and you’ll get a convenient way to meet many attendees.

Finally, we need ongoing help for the Atlas of Design:
  • Social Media Editor: We publish beautiful books of maps, and more people should know about it. Want to help spread the word?

  • Educational Materials Creator: Help get the Atlas into classes, and support educators who use it to inspire their students.

If you’re interested in any of these roles, reach out to volunteer@nacis.org! NACIS relies on volunteers to keep our much-loved community running, and we hope you can help.

Voting is open for the 2026 NACIS election

Every year, NACIS holds an election to fill vacant Board seats and as usual, we have a slate of highly qualified candidates for you to choose from. If you’re an active member of the Society, please cast your vote today. Voting ends at 11:59pm Central Time on Oct 12th.

VOTE NOW
Josh Ryan (Secretary) and Deondre Smiles (Director at Large) have stepped down from the NACIS Board for personal reasons this year. We thank them both for their service to the cartography community, wish them both well in their future endeavors, and look forward to seeing them back at NACIS soon. Per the bylaws, the Board appointed Josie Sajbel to serve the remainder of the current Secretary term. A special election for the vacant Director at Large seat will appear on the ballot, with current board member Lily Houtman as candidate for a one-year term.

Order your conference t-shirt today

The official 2026 NACIS Conference t-shirt is available as PRE-ORDER only to prevent us from ordering too few or too many shirts. Tiny Maps Returns

Last year’s Tiny Maps Gallery was a lot of fun, and we heard from a lot of folks who wished they’d created one.  You’re in luck – we’re doing it again this year!

The rules:
  • Map must be 4″ x 6″, (standard postcard size, portrait or landscape).
  • Map must be able to be pinned to the foamboard (so no heavy media)

To keep the display tidy, please don’t make it larger or smaller than 4×6.  If your map is smaller than that, please create it on a 4×6 ground.

If this sounds like fun, please submit your map via the gallery form by August 31st with the title Tiny Map Display: <name of map>, and we’ll know to include it.

The NYS GIS Association invites you to the 2026 New York State Geospatial Summit, which is being held in Skaneateles, NY this year on October 6th and 7th.

Call for participation: Ethics in Cartography

The ICA Commission on Ethics in Cartography invites everyone to participate in the third session of our summer workshop series: Mapping Ethical Landscapes in Cartography. You can participate in this workshop live online or anytime that is convenient for you.

The ultimate goal is to share a set of value statements, real-world examples in which they apply to the work cartographers do, and frameworks into which they can be placed. With this approach, we aim to offer resources that can guide practical decision-making and help cartographers better navigate ethical landscapes in cartography.

The workshop will be on Tuesday, September 2. For more information and details from our previous sessions, see our website. You can also join our Google Group to get email updates. We hope you can join us!

The Alliance of Freelance Cartographers needs your help! Our brief annual survey, assembled by NACIS members Aly Ollivierre and Daniel Huffman, is now open for 2026. Please consider taking it, and/or sharing it around to reach a broad audience.

This survey is for anyone, around the world, who did any amount of freelance mapping last year (even a little). You don’t need to think of yourself as “running a business” — as long as someone paid you to do cartography work, and it wasn’t part of a regular salaried job, we want to hear from you! The results from the survey strengthen our community, and we need your help to get a good sample. Please share with GIS & cartography audiences that you have access to.

Final call for 2026 Mentor Program: Mentors needed!

The NACIS Mentor Program is recruiting more mentors to round out this year’s program. We have a large number of excited mentees who would benefit from your knowledge and guidance. Without more mentor volunteers, we won’t be able to serve all our mentee candidates.

If you’re an experienced professional, please consider joining the NACIS Mentor Program to make a lasting impact on the next generation of cartographers and GIS professionals. This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to give back to the community, share your passion, and help shape the future of cartography. Please consider volunteering again if you enjoyed being a mentor in the past.

To volunteer as a mentor, log into the NACIS website, review the program details, and complete the application form (NACIS membership is required). The more detail you include on the application, the higher the likelihood that the Mentor Program coordinators will provide a good match.

Deadline to apply: February 17.

Pairing announcements will be emailed out by March 10, and the program lasts for six months (one meeting a month).

We invite you to attend our DEI meetings

NACIS News: November 2025
Thank you for making our annual conference in Louisville a success. It was wonderful to see everyone who could make the trip. We hope to see you all in Milwaukee, Wisconsin next year.

The recordings of this year’s presentations are now available on our YouTube channel! You can catch up on the talks you missed, rewatch some of your favorites, and share the videos with friends and colleagues. These videos are provided courtesy of NACIS, so we ask that you consider mentioning or tagging NACIS when sharing.

WATCH NOW

We would love to hear your thoughts on how the conference went so we can make improvements for future conferences. A survey was sent to attendees last week. If you joined us in Louisville, please help us improve our conference by filling out the survey by Friday, December 12th.

NACIS membership census is still open

NACIS is conducting an anonymous census of its entire membership and we hope you’ll volunteer a few minutes of your time to help our community. This census differs from our post-conference survey, as it’s for all members, not just those who are at the conference. Our goal is to understand the identities and experiences of our NACIS community. It takes approximately 10 minutes or less, all questions are optional, and your answers are anonymous.

BE HEARD

Membership price change

NACIS membership rates will be increasing as of January 1, 2026. This decision was deliberated over for a number of months, but due to the rising costs of all services we feel it’s necessary in order to help maintain the financial health of the organization. It has been 10 years since our last rate increase, which was a small $8 increase for regular membership. Prior to that, membership rates last changed in the late 1990’s – now almost 30 years ago.

The new membership rates will be:
  • General members: $75
  • Student members: $35
  • Affiliate and institutional members: $125

CaGIS Map Design Competition

You still have time to enter maps completed or published in 2025 in the annual CaGIS Map Design Competition. Entries must be received by January 31, 2026. See the CaGIS website for information and instructions, as well as a gallery of past winners. There is no fee to enter.
