NACIS board nominations close January 31st

Are you, or someone you know, interested in getting more involved in NACIS?  We’re looking for people to help lead our society, including a Vice President-elect, a Secretary, and a few Directors at Large. You can nominate yourself, or someone else who you’d like to run (but please get that person’s consent before nominating them).

NACIS runs on its volunteers, and serving on the Board is a great way to help shape the future of our society. Please go to nacis.org/nominations before January 31st to put in your nomination.

Volunteer on a NACIS committee

There are a lot of ways to get more involved with the NACIS community. One option is to join one of our volunteer committees – they’re not just for board members. The following committees are looking for help.
  • The Communications & Outreach Committee is working to find specific admin or instructor email addresses, especially for Minority Serving Institutions, so that we can better reach out about our annual meeting, scholarship, and student and travel grants. If you have an hour or two for web research and data entry, please reach out to committee chair Molly O’Halloran.
  • NACIS strives to create an open community that brings together map enthusiasts and creators. We recognize that there is much to be done to make the society and the cartographic field more inviting and inclusive for everyone. Therefore, NACIS commits to broadening opportunities and inclusivity for underrepresented and historically marginalized groups within the society, and nurturing and promoting diversity and inclusion throughout the cartographic field. The Diversity & Inclusion Committee helps to explore options in helping all of the above in order to make positive changes as well as encourage starting conversations in order to achieve continued improvements. Contact committee chair Vanessa Knoppke-Wetzel to participate.

Atlas of Design call for editors

Are you interested in being a part of the Atlas of Design editor team for Volume 6? Here’s a summary of the position and its responsibilities. Please reach out to the Atlas of Design team if you would like to apply. The deadline is February 21st. Can’t wait to hear from you!

In remembrance

NACIS joins in mourning the loss of writer Barry Lopez. Place and community were central to his work. His highly inquisitive writing sustains conservationists, activists, geographers, cartographers, and readers around the world. The main character from Lopez’s short story “The Mappist” inspired the creation of NACIS’s biennial Corlis Benefideo Award for Imaginative Cartography. We are honored to help with the work of carrying his vision forward.

Final call for entries:
CaGIS Annual Map Design Competition

The Cartography and Geographic Information Society is pleased to announce our 48th Annual Map Design Competition. The competition is open to all mapmakers in the United States & Canada for maps completed or published during the calendar year of 2020. Entry is free for all.

The purpose of the competition is to promote interest in map design and to recognize significant design advances in cartography. The focus of this competition is design; therefore, judging is based on cartographic design criteria, such as creativity, text (spelling and grammar, too), balance, unity, visual hierarchy, clarity, use of color, and subject matter. See award categories and entry details here. All submissions must be received by January 31st.
