Conference schedule

The preliminary conference program is now available. NACIS 2022 will feature over 150 presenters (across Practical Cartography Day, 21 Main Conference sessions, two discussion panels, three workshops, and one field trip). We’ll announce the official program once we confirm all speakers and finalize each session.

Attention presenters: Acceptance emails were sent out on July 19th. Please confirm your participation in NACIS 2022 by replying to the acceptance email at your earliest convenience. If you did not receive an acceptance email, please check your spam folder or email veep@nacis.org.

Hotel reservations

The conference will be held at the Renaissance Minneapolis Hotel (The Depot), 225 3rd Ave S, in downtown Minneapolis. Book your room online or contact Renaissance Reservations at 866-211-4611 and ask for the “NACIS Annual Meeting 2022 room block” to get the group rate of $199 for a standard guest room. The hotel website includes terms and conditions which explain the cancellation policy to avoid penalty.

Our block of rooms is selling fast so make your reservation early to get the discounted rate.

Student Print and Dynamic Map Competitions

Keynote speaker: Obi Kaufmann

To launch the 42nd Annual Meeting of NACIS, Obi Kaufmann—best-selling and award-winning author of The California Field Atlas series of books—will present the meaning and methods that drive his unique, hand-painted cartography. Obi’s work is based on the parsing of what he calls Ecological Philosophy, an examination of the rhetorical and epistemological theories of Consilience (the marriage of science and art), Aesthetics (the transmission of meaning through media), and Complexity (the functional description of emergent phenomena). By engaging this exciting brew of convergent ideas, Obi tells the story of how the road through geographic literacy leads to a new era of democratic sustainability, one that is mirrored in the well-being of the environment and one that we can and will usher in together.

Thinking Spatially Symposium: Indigenous mapping

Each fall, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at the University of Minnesota holds Thinking Spatially, an interactive mapping event designed to bring participants together around mapping a common research theme. This year’s symposium will explore the topic of indigenous mapping and cultural connection to place.

We are pleased to announce we will livestream this event Friday morning at the conference hotel so that NACIS attendees have an opportunity to participate. Join IAS for a discussion on confronting the historical truths of the university land grab that followed the Morrill Act of 1862. The panel will explore the use of maps to better understand the disenfranchisement of indigenous communities and how the simple act of geographic labeling impacts an entire community. Saturday workshops & field trip

When you register for the conference, add one of our post-conference mapping workshops. This year you can create your own gunpowder and cyanotype maps at UW-River Falls, participate in a collaborative “walkshop” organized by the Art and Cartography Commission of the International Cartographic Association, or develop your ArcGIS StoryMap skills.

Job opportunity at Syracuse University

The Department of Geography and the Environment, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure track position in the area of Cartography and Geovisualization at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. We seek a geographer whose scholarship focuses on conceptual, critical, empirical, experimental, and/or theoretical work in cartography. Candidates should demonstrate clear evidence of a strong research program and successful teaching experience as well as a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are particularly interested in hiring a cartographer who is both trained in and able to teach traditional cartography and cartography in the digital era. Ph.D. is required at time of appointment.
