NACIS News: August 2022

Date posted: August 25, 2022

Calling all NACIS members! We need your help to highlight the work of deserving candidates for the Corlis Benefideo Award. As our meeting in Minneapolis approaches, please spend a few minutes reading about past recipients and consider submitting a nomination.

The biannual Corlis Benefideo Award recognizes a body of work and the perspective it brings to the field of cartography and the contributions it makes to the world as a whole.

Proposal to add a second Student Board Member

Joining the NACIS board can be intimidating for anyone. This is especially true for student board members, who are at the beginning of their career yet we expect them to collaborate confidently with experts in the field. Given their shorter term of only one year and the power imbalance, student board members don’t realistically have the chance to contribute as much to NACIS as other board members.

The voices of our student board members are critical, and at a time when we’re dedicating ourselves to increasing diversity in our Society, the perspectives of student board members are especially valuable. The NACIS Board is proposing that we extend the term for Student Board Member to two years and add a second Student Board Member, elected in alternating years.

Please review the proposed changes to NACIS bylaws. NACIS members will be voting on this proposal at our Annual Business Meeting during the conference in October. If it passes, our current Student Board Member LaToya Gray-Sparks has graciously agreed to add a second year to her term.
